Born and raised in Montagu, Carolyn Metcalfe studied ceramics at the Johannesburg College of Art, and graduated in 1969. After living in London for four years, she returned to South Africa and in 1990 moved to Montagu, where she developed her own distinctive maiolica style and produces earthenware pottery. She owns the Ibis Gallery in Montagu and divides her time between painting and pottery
