Welcome to Galley Press

Galley Press is a small publishing company which began as Caversham Crafted Books in 1996. Our first publication entitled Kurzschlüsse was a book of aphorisms written by Günter Schlosser and printed in a handcrafted limited edition of 50 copies in Bad Ems, Germany, by Hungarian master printers, Galos & Galos, on an authentic antique Heidelberg Platen Press. Each of the 110 pages was illustrated with an original watercolour by Leigh Voigt executed on 200gsm Dürer cotton paper with watermark and deckle-edge. It had a hard cover, embellished with an original watercolour, edged in leather and presented in a slip case, hand-bound by Annie Roer in Mainz-Bretzenheim.

This publication was never sold and apart from a few copies given as gifts to family and friends, remains in the possession of the author and illustrator.

Now, 24 years later, Galley Press is proud to announce its latest book, and although not produced in the manner of old, the Field Guide to the Amaryllis Family of Southern Africa & Surrounding Territories has been lovingly created with the same high quality and respect for its readers and passion for its content and goal.

Field Guide to the AMARYLLIS FAMILY of Southern Africa & Surrounding Territories

Text by Graham Duncan • Watercolour paintings by Barbara Jeppe and Leigh Voigt

GalleyPress_FieldGuidePages

This much anticipated Field Guide has been two years in the making, coming as it does after the 45 years it took to gather information for the acclaimed Amaryllidaceae of Southern Africa (2016). For this new portable, sturdy and beautiful field guide, we arranged the species into biomes so that the reader can locate the plant for which an identification is required, by placing it in its natural habitat and where it is most likely to be found.

Graham Duncan updated the text and Leigh Voigt added 14 new paintings. Each species is illustrated with stunning photographs, a detailed watercolour and a map.

Designed by Tersia van Rensen.

A valuable addition to the natural history enthusiast’s library, this book is for plant lovers, and students of botany and scientists alike.

Printed by Tien Wah Press in Malaysia, 548 pages, 210 mm x 155 mm.

ISBN 978-0-620-8859-1

About the authors

Artist, Author & Publisher

Leigh Voigt is essentially a watercolourist, her early work being mainly of natural history subjects, never more beautifully depicted than in Lulu Phezulu, Leigh Voigt’s African Album, published in 1999, which won the Book Data’s South African Booksellers Book of the Year award. She has illustrated many books, including The Mantis and the Moon, Sambane’s Dream, The Shadow of the Wild Hare and The Abundant Herds – all written by her cousin Marguerite Poland. She collaborated with Sue Hart in In the Wild and Back in the Wild. Her fascination with trees led her to hold three solo exhibitions of tree paintings: Recollections of a Dendrogenealogist, 2010, with the accent on familial connections; The Boscias of Tswalu, the Musomorphology of Boscia albitrunca, 2015, reflecting her passion for wide open spaces and music; and The Silent Spectators of History, which was held at the Everard Read Gallery in London in 2018.  All these tree paintings were oil on canvas. Her watercolour botanical illustrations were almost incidental to her normal repertoire and then became an integral part of the work required in producing both The Amaryllidaceae of Southern Africa and the Field Guide to the Amaryllis Family.

Author

Graham Duncan grew up in Saldanha on the Cape West Coast where his interest in South African wild flowers, and indigenous bulbs in particular, began. A qualified horticulturist and botanist, he has for the past 41 years been curator of the indigenous bulb collection at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. He is the author of many popular articles, taxonomic papers and books, including Grow Nerines (SANBI, 2006), Grow Clivias (SANBI, 2008), the collaborative work Spring and Winter Flowering Bulbs of the Cape with Barbara Jeppe (Oxford University Press, 1989) and the internationally acclaimed monograph The Genus Lachenalia (Kew Publishing, 2012). His work ethic is phenomenal, sometimes managing two or three projects at the same time, but without compromising his thoroughness. His horticultural skills are unparalleled, his knowledge of plants is unsurpassed. A reliable researcher, Graham is undaunted by the most challenging of obstacles and has described more than 40 plant taxa. He is a regular contributor to Curtis’s Botanical Magazine, and a recipient of the International Bulb Society’s Herbert Medal, which he was awarded in 2001.

Artist

Barbara Jeppe’s first work in the field of botany was the Trees and Shrubs of the Witwatersrand in 1964. She established herself as one of South Africa’s most accomplished botanical artists when South African Aloes (1964) was published, followed by Natal Wildflowers (1975) and the Spring and Winter Flowering Bulbs of the Cape, (1989).  Barbara was born in 1921 in the small gold-mining town of Pilgrim’s Rest. She and her three siblings roamed the hills surrounding the town with their mother, who not only taught them the names of the plants but instilled in them the love of plants in their natural habitat. The children would often accompany their father, who was a land surveyor, on his field trips and so developed a love of botany and geology, a background which led to Barbara having a deep understanding of the environment as a whole.

Other Galley Press books available

THE AMARYLLIDACEAE OF SOUTHERN AFRICA
Graham Duncan, Barbara Jeppe, Leigh Voigt

Barbara Jeppe, botanical artist extraordinaire, conceived of this book way back in 1972 and with a monumental amount of work having been achieved, the book was still far from finished when she died in 1999. Her daughter, Leigh Voigt then took over. With the collaboration of Graham Duncan, curator of the indigenous bulb collection at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, after a further 17 years this highly acclaimed book was eventually published in 2016. It includes all the known genera and species of Amaryllidaceae in the entire southern African region and is probably one of the most comprehensive books on a single family in the botanical genre.

The Amaryllis Family must be the most fascinating, most glamorous, and because of its extraordinary seasonal appearances, the most beguiling of everything that Mother Nature can muster. Ponder upon an apparently barren stretch of veld, where, after a sudden downpour of rain or ferocious fire, a single scarlet Cyrtanthus or swathe of beautiful pink Brunsvigia bosmaniae emerges.

The Foreword was written by J.P. Rourke.
